In the past, one of my desires had been to go to Africa as a volunteer. I wanted to experience Africa as a land but not in the typical tourist way, but through the eyes of a volunteer. The idea seemed particularly interesting because I had and still have the opinion that the people and their culture can be experienced in a completely different way if you interact, live and work with them, and hear their stories. I wanted to stay in Africa for a longer period of time, not only a week or two. Because I really wanted this, I decided to live my dreams after finishing my studies and travel to Africa as a volunteer.

Through a friend, I found the association Kids are the World. I read what they had to offer on their website and how the voluntariness works in their programme. I thought it was great and was exactly what I was looking for. I contacted Urša immediately and she guided me until I showed up in Gambia after about a month. My stay in Africa as a volunteer began.
Every day we went to the kindergarten, where I taught my class of 5-6 year old children. Every day is uncommon and special here in Africa. Children here are completely different and working with them is special. They are always smiling, are lively and immensely adorable. In addition to meeting many children, I have also met many adults. The teachers were always willing to help, and people in general are very warm, humble, generous and always smiling. During the week, I worked at the nursery and went on some trips on the weekends. That way I saw a lot of Africa and its signature growth and nature, in addition to the people and the culture.
It is almost impossible to summarize even if I wanted to. I can only say that it was definitely the best decision of my life from which I learned a lot. I am glad I was brave enough to make that step and got to know Africa through the eyes of a volunteer or a person who lived with them and got to know them. Anything is possible, if the desire is strong enough. I will never forget my trip to Africa!
